Alright, guys, it’s time we stop and talk about you. Too much of life is doing things for other people. You complete projects at your bosses whim, or you run errands so your exhausted partner doesn’t have to. While you may not mind doing these things, heck, you may even enjoy it; it’s always nice to do things for other people. But this shouldn’t come at the expense of treating yourself.
Unlike the fairer sex, treating yourself isn’t something that men really do. But this isn’t the case. It’s just that we have different definitions of what treating yourself entails. While women head to the hairdressers or head to a spa, men prefer to sit back, chill out, and get in some much-needed me-time. You’ve likely done enough for others this year, so don’t be afraid to treat yourself for once. Here are some ways to do just that.
Rediscover Something You Loved
The older you get, the further you stray from the things that made you happy. It doesn’t happen on purpose. It’s just that responsibilities consume your time so much that once you feel ready to indulge your favourite hobbies, you’re too exhausted to do anything at all. You’d much rather just lay on the sofa and relax.
However, you need an escape from the daily grind, and there’s only so long you can lounge around the house before you get restless. With restlessness, you feel like you’ve wasted your time off, and you feel bad about yourself. It’s a vicious cycle that continues to repeat, and it a challenge to escape. It’s time to take a look at what you used to love and get back into it.
This old hobby could be anything. You can join a local football team; you can get back to playing your guitar that’s currently no more than a rock’n’roll ornament. You can write, read, paint, or exercise. There’s no limit to what you can do, and as long as it makes you happy, it’s worth it.
Step Into Another World
There’s a significant chance that your part of the generation that grew up with video games, and while the media has done everything they can to demonise consoles, you understand that isn’t the case. Games give you the chance to step into another world, and with the vast advancements made in technology, the experience is more immersive than ever.
Next-generation consoles are pulling out all the stops to make the next time you get in front of your Xbox, PS4, or Switch the best time you’ve ever had. Games like Modern Warfare and The Outer Worlds deliver a top-quality experience that you’ve previously only achieved in your dreams.
But you also shouldn’t forget virtual reality systems. The Best VR games for HTC Vive make it one of – if not the most – realistic experience yet, and the games from adventure to horror often feel a little too real. We all need that escape from reality sometimes, and now there is no better way to do it than with VR.
Take Some Time To Yourself
Alone time is something that everybody needs to unwind and reevaluate their life. Still, whenever you finally get the me-time you crave, something seems to crop up that demands your immediate attention.
You should attend to these things immediately, of course, and there’s no point putting them of. But you should still also find the opportunity to take some time to yourself. If you struggle to make the time, then schedule it into your calendar and do not abandon it.
If you live close to a National Park, then head there and take a walk to clear your head, or if that’s not possible because of the weather or lack of transport, then grab a pair of noise-cancelling headphones, whack on your favourite album, and lose yourself in the music. Even if it’s not long, the time you give yourself to think will be invaluable.
Update Your Wardrobe
This thing about men is that we find a style that suits us and stick with that style for the rest of our lives. If you don’t manage to get out much, you may not see the issue with wearing the same clothes for two, three, or even five years.
But that’s not strictly the case. Updating your wardrobe can give you a new lease on life. You can feel more fashionable, and even a t-shirt and a new pair of jeans can provide you with plenty of new outfit options that wouldn’t otherwise be possible.
Feel free to go on a shopping trip with friends or your partner and see what works for you. While vintage clothes are certainly in style, they also need to look good, and anything with holes in should be relegated from social clothes to pyjamas, or donated to charity.
Go Get That Thing
If there’s something you’ve had your eye on and have been saving up, now might be the time to go get it. Material things aren’t supposed to be the be-all and end-all of happiness, but you’d undoubtedly much rather cry in your new car than on your childhood bicycle, right?
If you’ve been saving money, then this shouldn’t impact your finances too much; that’s the whole reason you’ve been saving, after all. From a new smartphone to a new pair of shoes, there are so many retail therapy options that will make you feel a little better and maybe help you catch up with the rest of the world that has passed you by recently.
Treating Yourself Shouldn’t Be Selfish
A little self-indulgence now and again isn’t something anybody should consider selfish. In fact, it’s something necessary to keep functioning like a real human being. As long as you do not make a habit of treating yourself at the expense of other people and pressing responsibilities, you’ll find yourself happier, full of energy, and more ready to take on the world. With a little self-care here and there you can be the best person you possibly can.
