On Sunday afternoon, I skulked around Graduate Fashion Week at Earls Court 2 in West London to hunt out my picks of the best menswear graduates of 2011. What I noticed this year was an increase in menswear designers and the sheer talent of this years students, unrivaled in recent times. Enjoy….
Name, age and programme of study.
My name is Felicity Thomas, I am
21 years old and studied
Knitwear and Textile Design in the
Textiles, Fashion and Fibre programme at Winchester School of Art.
What is the story and inspiration behind the collection?
The idea behind research is taken beyond the original source. Tradition, deconstruction and the unusual in general features widely in this identity. This appreciation in the beauty of the unusual or the incomplete influenced development-utilizing works by Rachael Whiteread, the optical illusion of Trompe l’oeil architecture and photography from a childhood retreat Kirby Hall.
Designed for a new urban generation. Using traditional Aran wool, mercised cotton and cashmere mixes. The collection fuses traditional stitches and cables with collars, an elongated stripy sleeve and deconstructed jumper harem pants. Formal but edgy; urban yet strict.
Who is your collection aimed at?
As a colossal inspiration, Maison Martin Margiela designs concepts influenced conceptual thinking and design. This intellect suggests a new urban upper class. Mid- twenties to late thirties; this guy is in business…
“They are ‘Bourgeois Bohemians’ …they’re the new enlightened elite of the information age, their lucratively busy lives a seeming synthesis of comfort and conscience, corporate success and creative rebellion. Well- educated thirty-to-forty something’s, they have forged s new social ethos from a logic-defying fusion 0f 1960’s counter-culture and 1980’s entrepreneurial materialism.” Wittstock (2011).
What are your plans for the future?
Ambitious and determined to succeed, I hope to study a MA at the Royal College of Art. Meanwhile developing experience within the Knit Industry including designing, fabric development and additional techniques.
