A Gucci bag is not something I would pine for, mainly because I have found the brand’s more accessible pieces, including accessories, not of the finest quality. I have never had a problem with their clothing or shoes – pieces which I still have in great condition, I think pieces such as these will last for years to come.
There are bags that are for every day use, that get scratched on the floor and shoved in a locker – and then there is the Gucci woven leather holdall. Browsing through new destination e-tailer Mr Porter, I was just (almost) struck breathless by this incredibly striking bag and I guess so were the guys at the web site as it has its own page.
Made of supple yet durable Chablis calf leather with basket weave handles and woven bottom, there are a host of features and benefits to the piece which justify the £3,680 price tag. From the start, the piece designed by Creative Director Frida Giannini at the head quarters in Rome, the piece is worked on by a single craftsman in Tuscany, northern Italy using skills passed down through the generations.
Frida had quite a hard act to follow after Tom Ford left but she has made the brand her own, making me almost forget that Ford was at the helm. Yes, Ford bought sexy back to the company, Frida has bought desirable back with her combining the subtleties of branding with beautifully crafted items.
The leather is finished by hand, something I think can be seen immediately, as well as stained by hand which gives it a vintage feel, which as Mr Porter says, gives it a slightly unique finish. If the incredible woven detailing was not enough, then the smaller hardware bits include a hook closure fastener and small base feet, as well as the iconic double G logo and a small leather luggage tag.
