I got an email before Christmas from a young designer named Yasmin Bawa who has produced this collection entitled ‘Lattice’. This, her graduate collection in BA Menswear, was inspired by the Chinese photographic project ‘Family Stuff’ by Huang Quingjun and Ma Hongjie and features the prints of 50 rural Chinois homes.
From this Bawa has produced a collection that has drawn essences of these rural homes and Chinois lattice work to make a visionary and special collection. Together with the modern technical elements and interpretations, the collection of t-shirts and apparel reflects the modern changes within the east Asian family unit.
This collection uses natural fabrics, I think a requirement of today’s designers, hand dying and screen prints, which is one of my favorite design mediums. Though this is not enough for Bawa as she uses laser print technology for the cotton drill pieces such as the shirt below.
It really is an exciting time for the designer as I see the trend falling towards print technology for the coming seasons, but also because her talent is one rare from a recent graduate.
